English is a world language: it is spoken all over the globe, by a wide variety of speakers, regardless of their social or geographical situation. This diversity of practices creates a number of accents almost as varied as the number of speakers. But is it possible to know which of the two canonical forms of English accent, the British and the American, is the most widespread among French speakers?
In an attempt to answer this question, our guest of the day conducted a survey among students in the faculty of Anglophone Studies at the Université Paris Cité. The results? Inspiring data on the split between British and American accents among students, but also plenty of questions, at the intersection of linguistic philosophy, phonetics and sociolinguistics.
